It was here where these people mastered the Mayan calendar (more accurate than the one we use today), tracked the orbit of the stars with amazing accuracy and built towering pyramids.
The entire Mayan Empire was mysteriously abandoned around the year 900 AD, but the vestiges of their existence are very evident within the temples and palaces of the ceremonial ruined cities in the region. The colorful Indian markets of Guatemala and southern Mexico provide a present-day link to this ancient and mysterious civilization.
